Outlook 2016 Keeps Asking for Password

Issue

If you're connected to an Exchange 2013 server, you might be prompted to enter your user name and password in Outlook 2016, even though you're logged in to your computer with your network credentials and Outlook should silently log you in.

Resolution

Please install the latest updates to resolve this issue. To update Office, go to File > Account > Update Options > Update Now.

Issue

If a mail profile already exists, Outlook 2016 starts up fine and connects to Exchange (2010 On-Premise). If no mail profile exists however, like in the case of a newly imaged PC, Outlook 2016 prompts the end user with the Add Account wizard, and when it gets to the point of "Searching for user@domain.com settings" a Windows Security dialog appears which won't accept any credentials provided.

Resolution

the problem is because of the change of Outlook 2016 searching for autodiscover information. It first tries to go to your domain realm (ie: domain.com) to get mailbox information. I fixed by putting this value in the registry

In location HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Office\16\Outlook\Autodiscover

New REG_DWORD ExcludeHttpsRootDomain with a value of 1

Outlook will then go to autodiscover.domain.com for information which hopefully you have set up.

Issue

Outlook 2016 prompts for password when Modern Authentication is enabled

Cause

Outlook limits its choices of authentication schemes to schemes that are supported by RPC. This does not include Modern Authentication.

Resolution

Important Follow the steps in this section carefully. Serious problems might occur if you modify the registry incorrectly. Before you modify it, back up the registry for restoration in case problems occur.

Create the following registry key in order to force Outlook to use the newer authentication method for web services, such as EWS and Autodiscover.

1. Exit Outlook.
2. Start Registry Editor. To do this, use one of the following procedures, as appropriate for your version of Windows:
   
   • Windows 10, Windows 8.1 and Windows 8: Press Windows Key + R to open a Run dialog box. Type regedit.exe, and then press Enter.
   • Windows 7: Click Start, type regedit.exe in the search box, and then press Enter.
3. In Registry Editor, locate and then click the following registry subkey:
   
   HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Exchange
   
   
4. On the Edit menu, point to New, and then click DWORD Value.
5. Type AlwaysUseMSOAuthForAutoDiscover, and then press Enter.
6. Right-click AlwaysUseMSOAuthForAutoDiscover, and then click Modify.
7. In the Value data box, type 1, and then click OK.
8. Exit Registry Editor.
